Fun Fact: China's Panda Monopoly

Profiting Pandas

How many of you guys have been to a zoo that had pandas? I think I may have been to one, maybe. They aren't too popular where I am from however they are very popular throughout the rest of America as well as the world. Pandas are known for their cute, cuddly, friendly personalities. So often in fact, that people forget they are bears and can still kill you with a few good swipes. Anyway, have any of you thought about while they are a threatened species, there seem to be a lot of zoos that house them in captivity? Well someone in China thought this idea up, to make a profit off of their natural bear buddies.

Rent-A-Panda

In 1970 an agreement called the "Panda Diplomacy" was formed. This allowed the People's Republic of China to loan giant pandas to American and Japanese zoos. Years later in 1984, pandas were no longer given to these zoos as gifts and PRC decided to loan the pandas to zoos. This makes sense if you're trying to make a profit off these animals right? So how much would you pay for a panda? Well get ready for these terms and agreements. $1,000,000 per panda, per year, for a minimum of ten years. Amongst other agreements this would probably hit most of your wallets the hardest. Hold on, there's more. If your panda, typically with the help of a second panda, gives birth, the baby panda is property of the PRC. Now thankfully this kind of behavior did not stand too long. A lawsuit from WWF insured that an American zoo can only import a panda to the zoos with the agreement that half of the loan fee amount be donated to conservation efforts for the giant panda. Talk about making bank of bears. Now I'm sure this loan fee is put to good use but it still raises some eyebrows.

Tips? Find something unique to your area, loan it to outsiders for $1,000,000 a year and retain ownership over any products that come from it. Brilliant.

That's your daily brain gain!
