A Zombie Apocalypse Could Happen
We have all seen our fair share of zombie movies. The typical movie probably consists of some sort of virus epidemic. A virus that seemed to have spread faster than the common cold in winter. Sometimes bodies are depicted crawling out of graves in the middle of thunderstorms. The Zombies range from quick and smart to slow and dumb. No one is really sure what kind of zombies are the best but one thing is for sure, zombies are a make of fiction, or at least thats what people like to think. I'm here to tell you a zombie apocalypse is possible so you better start getting your supplies.
What's a Zombie?
Well the original zombie idea actually comes from a form of Vodou. The term zombie refers to an animated corpse raised by witchcraft or magic. Sounds pretty crazy right? Well we are talked about zombies here so what do you expect. In Africa, the animated corpse that is raised is controlled by a bokor or sorcerer. The zombie then remains in control of the bokor as he zombie has no soul or control. If this type of zombie were to take over the world it would either be really awesome or terrible. I mean if I had a zombie, I think it'd be great to have a personal butler. Although if some dictator got ahold of an army of zombies, well you know where that could lead. Essentially zombies are mindless reanimated corpses that actively resemble puppets to those who raise them.
So Where Are the Zombies?
Obviously there are no zombies yet, I know, you caught me. I'm just here to tell you that it's possible. This doesn't mean you should literally run off and grab guns, ammo, and food but don't take your guard down either. Zombies started as a religious idea, it was adopted and adapted by the cinemas, and now has taken a turn towards science.
So lets start with the idea that these zombies were created from a freak virus that broke out. Similar to what happened in movies like 28 Days Later, I Am Legend, and Resident Evil. So what weird virus exists today that could act a a zombie carrier? The rabies virus is the closest we have and it isn't far off either. Not going to go into detail about what the rabies virus is but it is basically a disease that affects the central nervous system. I mean we all already fear rabies and I don't even know exactly what it is. However, if you're telling me that the rabies virus was combined with something like the common cold or flu, I'm going to get as far away as possible.
If this virus strain did originate from the rabies virus then this scenario would play out more like Resident Evil in that the effects do not take place immediately. One day your best friend, two weeks later brain eating mindless organ vessel. Your friend could change anywhere from a few days to a year. So a mass zombie uprising is unlikely but possible in that sense.
What Would Make This Possible?
Rabies is spread typically through animals, bites, scratches, etc. and would be the perfect setup for a movie. However for a zombie apocalypse to happen the virus would need to spread quicker. A lot quicker, for example and to terrify you more, airborne. Rabies virus goes airborne, you have yourself a very contagious rage virus.
Could scientists make a zombie virus on their own? Absolutely, unfortunately. It's really not that difficult when you think about it. Combine the rage of the rabies virus, the easily contagious traits of the flu, and throw in a pinch of measles, small pox, or even just the common cold for added value. The result would be a very dangerous disease. Hopefully something like this doesn't happen by accident. Viruses, thankfully, don't work well with others so it may not happen but it's completely plausible.
Zombies are coming, it's just a matter of time.
